You could argue that this really was a case of closing the stable door once the horse has wandered off, but the analogy, while relevant, is not really accurate enough.
It is more that you notice that the door to the hen coup is open but there are half a dozen foxes already in there... and then you close the door. .....and then you stand outside the door looking in while the foxes have chicken for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
